There is no mention of dinosaurs in genesis. One might presume that a variety living organisms which is particularly huge, and in some cases carnivore, should be of some interest to the people writing this book. The real answer is that this people had no idea about the existence of dinosaurs because the where separated by say: 65 million years.

Considering
Some claims proposed by creationist; the one about people living along with dinosaurs doesn’t sound remotely as silly as saying that the animals “rafted” on logs to their current continents. I’m not saying is not silly though; just that is not as funny as others.

I am writing an essay on how the creation account in Genesis affects a Christian worldview. I am not asking you to, like, write my essay for me, I am just extremely interested in what you might have to say about it. :)

Creationism is one of the mayor problems with the christian belief and this is accepted by some religious denominations. It’s so corrosive to christianity that whenever an atheist (or anyone) quotes a verse from the old testament in an attempt to demonstrate how unfitting the moral rules of 3 to 4 thousand years ago are to the current state of society, the almost invariable response is something like “well but that’s the old testament, it doesn’t count”

So if it doesn’t count then why not just bin it? Well, they can’t do that because god the father is suppose to be Jahweh. I think christianity as a creed would be improved (not much though) if god the father was some other guy; say a “new” god. That would of course mean that all the prophecies are not so, and they would also have to invent some other excuse to kill god the son. This are some of the reasons why you can’t fix the story in such a drastic manner, and even if they did, it would still not make the christian myth true. It would just be a little bit less ridiculous.

Some religious denominations change stuff all the time in order to keep their faithful happy with their creed. The catholic church has invented quite a few things: the assumtion of the virgin Mary, Limbo, celibate clergy just to name a few. Adding stuff to the story is fairly easy, but trashing the old book is not feasible.

Given the fact that a 4 year old in our days knows more about the natural world than a person was bound to learn in their lifetime during the bronze age, Genesis is a book that holds no water even by relatively dumb standards. People like Ken Ham use arguments like quote: “if you say this part (of the bible) over here that says god made land, animals and man on the same day is not true, then ultimately, why should I believe this part over here?” to support the idea that genesis must have happened. In other words Genesis must be true in order for all the other crazy stuff that comes later to be true. But if anything, it’s a reason to invalidate the whole veracity of the story. Quotes like that are also suggesting that creationist enforcers don’t really believe what they preach, but that they need it to be true to keep preaching.

The main problem I see with creationism (other than the not being believable issue) is that it promotes the suspension of critical thinking; which makes otherwise reasonable people take actions based on a supposedly higher and beyond understanding sense of morality. This way of thinking can be held responsible for the killing of abortionist, the abuse and subjugation of women, the systematic bulling of homosexuals and countless other actions. The belief that you are doing something based on a higher moral order gives you the freedom to justify virtually anything.

I think it’s obvious that this sense of morality is much, much more scary and dangerous than a human based morality.

Thanks for giving me an opportunity to rant, and for taking such an interest in what I have to say. I greatly appreciate it, and I hope you find it helpful.

Of course!
Travel by volcano. That explains it. I wonder why geologists didn’t think of that. They must be biased.
