Can theists be rational?
If not, then how do you account for theists in the scientific and philosophical community (past and present)?
If yes, then is their theism a vacuum of reason, or just an inconsistent addition to an otherwise rational mind?

Of course they can be rational. They just don’t apply rationality o reason to their religious thinking. I would go with something like your last statement anon. It’s very nicely phrased: “Religious thinking is sometimes an inconsistent addition to an otherwise rational mind.

That’s ridiculous, it’s entirely possible to be rational about religious thinking. That doesn’t mean they would inevitably come to the conclusion that religion isn’t worthwhile. What’s impossible is being entirely rational about everything else.

Could it be more rational to be agnostic vs. atheist or theist? Meaning that you understand the reality that there is a point at which you no longer can ‘Know’ (capital K) answers through reason?
