I live in West Texas, and you might know that that's heavy Christian territory. For obvious reasons I avoid talking about religion with them, because they get angry at any point I make. Many of them tell me that atheists are going to hell, without knowing that I am one.

I feel like I have to "come out", like everyone would hate me for it, but I feel so alone and this blog really helps me feel not so alone. Thank you for that, and I just want to know if I should come out, and if so, how?

Thank you segwaymuch. I’m glad you find this site helpful. You are definetly  my target audience. I wish for people to come out and live their lives without lying to other or to themselves.

But (there is always a but) a few restrictions apply. First and foremost I wouldn’t recommend coming out while you are not an independent and self supported individual. If you live with your parents, or depend on them (they pay your rent, tuition at school, etc) hold your horses.

When I say this I’m not implying that you should ‘milk’ your parents and then disappoint them, but it can become quite a struggle to live under the same roof with someone questioning your beliefs all the time. Maybe your parents are more tolerant than your friends. I don’t know.

If the people around you are going to leave you because of your lack of belief, then in my opinion they are not the best people to sorround yourself with. You are not alone. There are people that will support you and stand by you because of who you are and not because of what you believe.

Have you heard about the http://www.atheist-experience.com/? It’s right there in Austin. I have family members living there and they say it’s not all that bad in the city. I couldn’t say for sure though.

Hope this helps =)
